Installation mechanic for HVAC Dominik Zogakis – HAZET industry story

Broken pipe? Heating not working? Or want a whole new solar heating system installed? Dominik Zogakis is the right person to talk to!

Dominik Zogakis has followed in his father's footsteps and successfully completed his training as a plumbing, heating and air-conditioning installer in his company.

With 8 employees, including 2 trainees, the team is at hand to solve every and any pipe-related problem their customers may have! Dominik is also attending technical college (German: "Meisterschule") to further hone his craft!

Work as an installation mechanic for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning

The abbreviation "SHK" is German for "Sanitär-, Heizungs- und Klimatechnik", in English "Plumbing, heating and air-conditioning engineering" and hereafter referred to as "SHK professional". Pipes are what connect these three fields together, whether it's water, gas or air that they're transporting. But no matter which of the three is flowing through the pipes, an SHK professional needs to know about each inside and out!

Colloquially in German, people who exercise this profession are known as "Klempner" (English: "plumber"), but the German term actually means "tinsmith", a tradesperson who covers roof surfaces, chimneys and facades. Nevertheless, Dominik is a fan of his unofficial job title and likes to be called it.

A day on the job with our installation mechanic for HVAC: An interview with Dominik

What does a plumbing, heating and air-conditioning installer do and why is the profession so varied? Dominik talks you through you his everyday work!

In insightful video tutorials, the HVAC professional gives valuable tips for aspiring plumbing, heating and air-conditioning installers and DIY enthusiasts.

Our daily business is, of course, customer service. There's always a leaky pipe or a broken heating system to be fixed somewhere. But we also install complex heating systems and carry out bathroom renovations. Renewable energies are another big part of our work.

I first studied mechanical engineering. During placement, I had the chance to work in large companies and immediately realised that the work given to me by my superiors wasn't going to fulfil me. I missed the practical work and that's why I asked my father if I could do an apprenticeship with him. He was very pleased and is very happy about my decision.

A secondary school diploma is enough to get you in. But if you think you can get away with not knowing your school mathematics to become an apprentice, you are sadly mistaken. Anyone who lays gas pipelines must have learned and understood physical and technical correlations beforehand. A willingness to learn and enthusiasm for engineering are therefore the most important prerequisites.

We meet at the workshop in the morning, have a coffee and discuss the day's projects. For large jobs, a team of several of us travel out to the customer's site. In the afternoon, we usually go to the recycling centre. In the evening, we discuss the day's work together back in the workshop.

We were once called up because of a defective heating system and later discovered that no flue pipe had been laid at all. The exhaust gases were simply led into the room. Whoever was behind that job put the lives of those living in that home at risk.

When the river Wupper burst its banks due to heavy rainfall, it was not only an extreme situation for those directly affected, but also for us. In many flooded cellars, the heating systems either had to be repaired or, in most cases, completely replaced.

Heat pumps are becoming more and more popular. I find ground source heat pumps particularly exciting. If you have a large garden, you can lay pipes underground, at a depth of about 1 metre. The water that is pumped through these pipes is heated by the geothermal heat. So you can use your own garden as an energy source!

HAZET tools are incredibly robust and feel great in your hand. The tools are well thought out. HAZET somehow always finds a way to make them even better. The HAZET product range unfortunately does not yet cover all the tools we need for the plumbing, heating and air-conditioning (SHK) sector. That's why we are keen to see HAZET's new product releases and want to work alongside them to complete the product range in this segment to the best of our ability!

The video endoscope set with 180° swivelling probe gives you a rear view of micro lens with 4.5 mm diameter. The 5-fold LED light source provides perfect illumination.

With the powerful rechargeable battery, you can work for up to 4 hours without stopping. The connected probe is waterproof in accordance with IP67 certification, making it ideal for the HVAC sector!

Reliably avoid dangers

SHK professionals need to be able to skilfully handle machinery and gas pipes. Because if they aren't careful, they put their own life and the lives of those around them at risk.

Only with reliable tools can work be done safely. Because HAZET tools offer precisely that, Dominik chooses HAZET.
